Frequently Asked Questions - Coke Zero / Zero Coke Print E-mail

The Zero Coke movement has received a lot of support. If you've got a question not answered here, email tim[at]thezeromovement.org.

Q. What's the deal with "the zero movement" advertisements around Australia right now?

A. 'The Zero Movement' was created by Coca-Cola to promote their new artificially sweetened soda, Coke Zero. For weeks Coke's connection to the zero movement was not made clear in their communication. Coke appears to have employed tactics such as offline SPAM and online SPAM to try to appear 'urban' and 'edgy'.

This site called Coke's marketing people wankers pretending to be a grassroots movement. In fact, that quote was published in The Age newspaper. Pretty soon Coke changed tactics and took responsibility for the zero movement frontgroup. Coke are yet to apologise for their SPAM. Read the whole story here.

Q. What's in Coke Zero?

A. All Coke Zero ingredients are now listed at this site. Two curious ingredients are the artificial sweeteners aspartame and acesulfame potassium. You may be interested in reading about these before you put them in your body.

Q. What's wrong with the Coca-Cola company?
Depends on your values and ethics. This summary introduces a few of the reasons some people are wary of Coke. Also, there is some good reading on Coke's activities here in Australia, in India, Colombia and the UK.

Q. Coke are spending $18 million dollars on their campaign to promote Coke Zero. How much have you spent so far?

A. About $18.

Q. Have Coca-Cola called you yet?
A. No. According to this week's B&T magazine, "Coke's corporate view is not to respond to the online campaigns". Of course, that quote is from an article where Coke's marketing director, John Wardley, spends the entire interview responding to our online campaign.

Q. Some people fear that aspartame may cause brain tumours. What do you say?

A. Brain tumours may explain Coke's "zero movement" marketing strategy.
